That is the description of the mentality from our former lifestyle. In this week’s reference scripture, the Apostle Paul does three things: 1. He points out that he is going on record as speaking as before The Lord Himself in his next instructions; 2. He begins his instructions telling us not to walk (i.e. live life) the way non-Believers live; and then 3. He begins a laundry list of traits that reflect the world and the past, by addressing our mind and mentality.
I really love the fact that we are dealing with the issues of our mind immediately after our 2016 Summer Bible Study Blog wrapped up with a similar concept, “You become what you think about.” But in this case, Paul is saying that “Let your thoughts reflect who you have become.” So what exactly does that mean?? It is simple... In the first quote above, we understand that whatever we allow to consume our minds, will become a reality. But in the second quote, we are encouraged to intentionally adjust our minds according to the new life we have accepted; and, control our thoughts to line up with that new life. We are not to allow our thoughts to dictate who we are, but to allow who we are to dictate our thoughts!
Let me share some examples of what it means to have weak, wanting, or wrong mentality.
- Worry is weak, wanting, and wrong because it lacks trust, wants what God has not provided, and wrong because scripture tells us not to worry. Been there? I have…very recently!
- Doubt lacks Faith, wants proof, and is wrong because it keeps us from obeying God.
- Envy lacks love, wants what it cannot have, and wrongly robs us of our joy.
- Gossip lacks peace, wants self-esteem by making others look bad, and robs us of healthy relationships
- Fear lacks courage, wants no trouble, and robs us of our promises.
Get the picture? This is not easy. Sometimes it takes a lot of encouragement and accountability from others. I’m here to encourage you…who can you encourage today to have the mind of a Child of The King??
