Selah" ~Psalm 20:3
Many of the Psalms were written to be sung as worship in the Sanctuary of God. Most of those psalms include the word “Selah” at one or more point. Based on my research, the word Selah is understood to be a musical term that has a two-fold meaning. It is instructive to both the singers of the psalm or verse, and to the musicians accompanying the singers. To the singers, the words instruct them to pause or rest from their singing; to the musicians, the word instructs them to exalt or lift up a loud noise. So, while the singers take a break, the musicians are to make a loud exclamatory clash of cymbals or blast of trumpet.
Why don’t we, like those of old, take our instruction from the choir director and pause for reflection and exaltation… Let us reflect on the names of Jehovah, and how He answers us in the various ways He displays His power and care. Let us exalt the name of The Lord for answering, defending, helping, strengthening, and remembering us in our lowest lows and highest highs. We have read and seen and learned and experienced so much…let us reflect on it all, and exalt His great name! Selah!!
