Ephesians 4:12 can get a bit confusing because of the way it is worded, and because I am not a Bible scholar. But I feel very strongly in my spirit that the true and correct understanding of what Paul was saying is found in the following quotes of a commentary on verses 11 and 12 found in Expositor's Greek Testament. It states,
“Christ gave some men as Apostles, some as prophets, etc., with a view to the full equipment of the saints for the work of ministration or service they have each to do in order to the building up of the body of Christ.” The building up of the Church—that is the great aim and final object; to that every believer has his contribution to make; and to qualify all for this is the purpose of Christ in giving “Apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers.”
Ok, yes I know this was written over 60 years ago and is somewhat hard to understand. So let me make it plain: The reason God gave us the fivefold ministry is so that they can train the rest of us to do the work of ministry (reach the lost and serve one another with our gifts and callings) so that we can all contribute to edifying (instruction and improvement) of the entire Body of Christ.
The world needs us and we need one another! Is there someone you can minister to this week in order to add to the Body of Christ, either in numbers or improved walk with God? If you feel unqualified for the work of ministry, maybe it’s time to seek out those in the fivefold ministry who can effectively train and qualify you in the area of ministry and service. It's time we all resolve to do the work of ministry!
Seeking to Grow my Walk with God and Others,
