That Great Name

"May He send you help from the sanctuary,
And strengthen you out of Zion;"
~Psalm 20:2

The name and person of Jesus fulfills the promise of the temple of God and mount Zion...God's dwelling places. By the name of Jesus, I become the temple of God and inherit the power, position, presence of God, prosperity, privilege, and purpose of mount Zion. By the name of Jesus, I am found in God, worthy of all that comes by and through Him.

This song that I heard for the first time yesterday in worship says it all...it's a song and a sermon. The passage of scripture says this...: "For we...who worship God in the Spirit, rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh...But what things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ.

Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith... Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me. Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus."

Press on my friends, to the high places of God, to the high calling in Christ Jesus, to the promise of Zion through the great name of Jesus Christ our Lord, whose name has made us the temple of the living God. I weep at that name. His is the greatest name of all; a name above all names.

Strong Like Zion

~Psalm 20:2

What is the relevancy of Zion for Christians today? If God living within His people today represents the Old Testament Sanctuary, Zion could point to a modern day state of being for God’s people. Psalm 125:1 says, “Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion, which cannot be moved, but abides forever.”

Zion was a fortress; a place of strength, protection, and safety. ~2 Samuel 5:6-9
Zion was a high place; a mountain. ~Psalm 48:1-2
Zion was a place God chose to meet with His people. ~Psalm 87:1-2; 74:2
Zion was a place God set apart for those He chose and love. ~Jeremiah 3:14
Zion was a place of refuge for His people. ~Joel 2:32

So if we have the living God of the universe living inside us, how are we doing/being in the areas above?

Are we a walking talking pillar of strength? Are we living in the Spiritual high places? When people meet us, do they sense we have God’s presence engaged with and in us? Does our life reflect that we are set apart for God's purpose by His great Love? Is it clear that our refuge and hope lies in the One who lives in us, and not the security and status quo of society?

As a Believer, no matter what our stage of growth in Christ, we have Him living inside; but, being strong like Zion, metaphorically, comes from living in a constant state of communion and closeness with God. Throughout the Old Testament, scripture constantly reminds God’s people of the great work He has done, and desires to do at Zion. Will you receive that promise?

May we daily seek to become everything that God has promised for His dwelling place.

Help From Where?

…the sanctuary…

Before Christ came and died on the cross, God lived in Heaven and He primarily visited humanity in temples, often called a sanctuary (a term still used often today). After Christ’s death, God fulfilled His promise to live within human hearts according to Joel 2:28. At the point of Salvation, we become the living, breathing temple of God…the place where He lives on earth. He no longer visits with His people; He is with us...within us...always.

So where do you run to receive help from the God of the universe? Do you run to the church, synagogue, or mosque? A priest, pastor, or rabbi? You have no greater help than The Spirit of The Living God. And if you are a Born Again Believer according to scripture, you have no further to run than that the power living within you. Let me tell you…there is NO way you can fail with the God of all heaven and earth living inside you!

My son and I discussed a part of my pastor’s message from a couple of weeks ago, and he pointed out that when God’s will is made known in Heaven, nothing hesitates and no one questions. Well when His will is ruling in us, imagine what that could mean for us and the world around us? What could manifest or transform? What could succeed or be defeated? How great could be our victory?!

Who is He?

Who is the He referred to in this month’s verse? You got it! He is The Lord. In the Old Testament, His name is Jehovah. In the New Testament, His Name is Jesus. Last week we looked at a list of God’s names that begin with the proper name Jehovah. But what are some of His other great names??

El Shaddai (Lord God Almighty)
El Elyon (The Most High God)
Adonai (Lord, Master)
Yahweh (Lord, Jehovah)
El Olam (The Everlasting God)
Elohim (God)
Qanna (Jealous)

Can you list any more?

There is much to discover and understand about the He of our verse this month. His names tell much about Him. But knowing is not enough to really understand; we must experience. In what ways have you been able to experience the He of Psalm 20:2? Has He been there (Jehovah Shammah) with you in what only you and He know about? Has He been more? What name of The Lord have you called on lately? Whatever your need, He has a Name for that!
