Don't Look Back!
Happy New Year to you and welcome to 2014! The year to reign supreme. If you are like most people you started thinking back in late October early November about the New Year. Many of you smiled with joy, peace and anticipation about what lay ahead. Others began to panic, experience feelings of anxiety and unrest as you thought about everything that you had not achieved on your list of goals for the year. Wherever you fell in this continuum the reality is that 2014 is HERE! Now what do you do?
As a therapist I can not tell you how often I hear my clients say things like “I wish I had not done.., If only I had…, My life would be so much better if I had…” We say these things when we find ourselves in situations in which the outcome would have been extremely different if only we had taken a different path, made a different choice. Yet the unfortunate truth is that as much as we would like to we can not turn back the clock. The infamous hands of time continue to tick and tock through out this journey we call life.
So the question then is well what do I do with the dreams of goals of last year? Do I write them off as a lost and create all new ones for this year? Do add them to my current list for this year and pray that I have enough energy to get me through the year to tackle such tasks? Do I do nothing and wait on God to make this miracle happen as he said he would do? Great questions! I believe the answer lies in a little bit of each of them. Analyze each goal and identify the reason you want to achieve it. Be honest with yourself when asking if it is realistic based upon what is needed to make it happen, i.e. time, resources, man power, etc. Prioritize each goal and create a strategy that can help intertwine some of the old goals with new ones for the New Year.
I truly believe that 2014 is the year to live with a TRUE spirit of expectancy. Trusting that everything you set out to do, that you have been called to do, will prosper. Understanding that as your faith is important so is the “work” that you put forth to make things happen. I charge you to stop looking back. What matters now is your ability to make good choices and to be intentional in all that you do this year regarding your future, your dreams and goals. The best is yet to come!
