The African American Culture is one birthed out of horror, cruelty, and sheer inhumanity. Stripped from and of their home, culture, families, and names, these people were eventually left to reinvent themselves. The only examples they had to emulate, were the ones who either despised them or pitied them; and those with whom they dare not claim to be equal. But how do you transform your language, your diet, your culture, your name, your entire identity to mirror another’s without desiring the rights and responsibilities that come with who you have made yourself to become…no longer an African…an American.
One day a young man made a decision to sacrifice his personal comforts and security to pursue an American dream that reflected the Declaration of Independence for ALL Americans, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.–That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, –That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness…”
A little over 50 years ago, because of this man and many like him who “took the hit” for themselves and ALL future American minorities, discrimination and segregation became illegal. Today Costly Oil, along with all of the United States of America, celebrates the birth of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. We salute his unparalleled contribution to the moral and ethical fiber of this great nation.
Today I personally say THANK YOU for the opportunities my children and I have as Americans that my grandparents did not, simply because of the color of their skin.
If you are an American, regardless of your ethnicity, gender, or age, realize that you live in one of the greatest countries in the world. Embrace that reality and use it to DREAM!
